The Shores of Tripoli

My Stay in Tripoli, Libya

North Africa

The Shores of Tripoli

Our First Tour

This is Tripoli harbor on the Mediterranean Sea. 1951/1953

My stepfather was in the Air Force and Tripoli, Libya was where my family was stationed. The Air Base was called Wheelus AFB. I have tried to bring up information about Tripoli, but unfortunately it goes to another Web Site. We were there in 1951 to 1953, returned in 1957 to 1960. I have many great photo's, plus some I borrowed from my Mom. I will explain each one and any story I can add to the photo. The photo are large because I want you to get a good view. So please be patient and let the photos download. I'm sure Mom will correct me on any missed spelled word, time or place.

Please sign my Guestbook and let me know what you think of this site.

(1) I call this one, The Shores of Tripoli. (2) This is the Grand Hotel, facing the Shores.

(3) This is the Catholic Church with our taxi's waiting.

They are call -- Gerries. In Arabic they are called "Karroosaa" for one and "Krarees" for two or more. Mom said we always got a flea as a bonus. Dang, if I can remember. I was just having fun. Getting started from downtown to:

Almost home.. Since you don't see the driver - guess who took the photo? Not bad, huh?

I guess you can call this ' the center of town.'

This is the entrance to the Old City, which looks like a castle.

The walls were built to protect the City.

This street used to be call "24 December Street". I always thought of Christmas. Later, in 1969, they changed the name to "1st of September". Do you see the bus coming toward us? That was the blue bus we rode to Wheelus AFB. The thing hanging in the air is one street light.

Down the V shaped street, "Omar El Mukhtar" (named after an Libyan Fighter against the modern Italian occupation of Libya from 1911 to 1943) in the far back had two things I remember. 1.) A British Theatre - where in 1952 I sat with my sister watching the news reel of Queen Elizabeth inauguration. It was a Cinderella story to me. 2.) Our landlord has a Jewelry shop and every time we stopped in we got a trinket.

Piasita Itila (Plazza Italia) as it was called during 1951 thru 1953. The name has been changed to "Maidaan Ash'shuhadaa" or "Martyrs Square" in English.

Our garbage man, Ali. I bet you knew his name.

Local Arabs

Ask me how many times I saw this... date anyone? Picture above on far right is a Holiday which reminds me of Halloween. The child in the middle is dressed in bark, he goes from store to store and they give him candy. This Holiday is called "Ashoora" which means in Arabic "The Tenth day of the month, but here it means the 10th day of the Lunar Islamic first month "Muharram". Muslims usually celebrate this day in several aspects among them 'Fasting'. This means they do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset for several reason:

1) Arabs hundred years before Islam (before 610 AD) 'fast' this day

2) Arab Jews also fast this day in the same period because they believe that it is the day when God saved his Prophet "Moses" and his people from Pharaoh of Egypt when he made the sea opened to save his people from Egypt

3) Muslims believe in Adam, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and all other prophets of God, as same as his last messenger "Muhammad", so they start fasting "Ashoora" with Jews.

4) It is the day when "Al-Husain Ibn Ali" ( The Husain son of Ali) - the son of the cousin of Prophet Muhammad "Ali" whom is also the husband of one of Muhammad's daughter and the fourth Muslim Ruler of the Islamic Empire -martyrized in one of his battles against the corrupted Islamic Ruler of that time.

The above information has been given to me by Abdullahhakeem Tweel, Libyan Engineer & Journalist.

Mohammad Binlamin

Mohammad Binlamin - Fine Artist

Mohammad Binlamin

The Inner Vision: Bin Lamin's world By: Solara Sabah. Canada

Mohammed Bin lamin an artist who is residing in his concealed and private world. Ethan chorin An American writer described him as “unique artist”.
Although Bin lamin never attained any formal school to learn art nor any Institute of Arts, but he is up to date in his art and very bright about his own culture. Through experimental research spanned for over fifteen years, Bin lamin was able to create very important new technique with special appropriate materials for his paints (this technique is still unknown in the world so as Bin lamin at the edge of the Sahara in Libya). His works look as if it is a legacy for a great civilization that is vague. Firm structures animals or organisms that look spiritual and shy. He called them “Yellow Beings”, which almost you can feel their warm breath, they looked as if they have just emerged from old caves to walk in and surprised by its first step, or sometimes they look as if they run away from scorched land. Bin lamin’s characters in this art are creatures that inhabited his world with their own privacy and identity, the light emanates from them, glowing and dancing surrounding with the rhythm of the blue night. In “Opera of Spoons “ bin lamin painted the gaze faces in the spoon using the foam that left over the spoons after stirring the coffee. Bin lamin in his works is digging to create a lasting images of inner being and place, in others words his art represent the unspoken language of our eternal dreams. -----------------------------------------------
* (Mohammad Bin Lamin's Yellow Beings) From Book (Translating Libya – The Modern Libyan Short Story) By Ethan Chorin American writer and translator A few weeks after I arrived back in Washington, Lamia El-Makki (author of 'Tripoli Story') sent me a link to the website of Libyan artist Mohammad Bin Lamin. I’d seen various pieces of Libyan art, some good, some not so good; all, like Libyan literature, somewhat haunting. Bin Lamin's work, however, was singular. I was struck in particular by a group of paintings under the heading (Yellow Being). They were both outlandish and colorful, sort of a cross between Dali and Rothco, flavored with desert and sun. One piece, depicting a creature walking with a staff, his hair wild, I imagined to be the kindly alter-ego of the evil Marabout in 'The Yellow Rock'. When I asked Bin Lamin where his Yellow Beings come from, he was open to suggestion: 'They are spiritual beings,' he offered, 'somehow bound up with the miracle of existence. Perhaps they are leaves which have fallen from an old tree that is no longer there, or people who have yellowed with maturity.' Bin Lamin insisted the Yellow Beings were 'not Libyan in particular', but in Bin Lamin and his work I thought I saw something quintessentially Libyan. If Bin Lamin were a writer, I'd no doubt have included his stories here. Perhaps the Yellow Beings do indeed have some magic about them, for a month after I returned to the States; Bin Lamin inadvertently solved our last remaining problem when he asked if I would look over a few stories by a friend. At that point, Basem and I had basically given up on finding that one story with reference to the ‘most beautiful place in all of Libya’. I thought I had come close when the septuagenarian owner of a newly-opened used bookstore in Tripoli’s Old City told me knew someone in the area who wrote short stories, but it was not to be. With its timely and detailed descriptions of Darnah and its environs, Abdalla Ali Al-Ghazal’s ‘The Mute’ would constitute the final piece of our geographic jigsaw puzzle. Omar Attira’s trip around half the world

Because of his great loves for nature, travel and exploring the world and cultures, traveler Omar Attira began in 1997 his famous trip around the world on foot, after preparations and exercises that lasted for years in his home country Libya. He set out from his home in Benghazi city in the eastern part of Libya to start his long on-foot trip to Egypt, and this trip was the first step in his travels around the world, and from there he continued walking on foot across three continents: Asia, Europe and Africa. He crossed 76 States. On his trip, which lasted 8 years and two months, he explored the life, history, geography and cultures of different peoples and environments, and took thousands of photographs. During his trip, Omar experienced lots of difficulties and hardships; he survived Turkey’s devastating earthquake that occurred in 1999, and across the Victoria Falls in Africa, the second greatest waterfalls in the world; and he also survived an attempted murder and kidnapping in the jungle, and was about to be prey to Africa’s lions. He also suffered from a temporary paralysis in the left arm in the middle of his trip. Omar Attira was the first to fly the flags of Libya and the African Union over the crest of the highest volcanic mountain in the world; Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, where it took him three days to climb and reach the summit. During his exciting trip, which lasted for 3000 days, Omar met with international prominent personalities: presidents, princes, ministers and celebrities from various walks of life. He visited the prison of freedom fighter Nelson Mandela and visited the International Court of Justice in The Hague. During his world trip, Omar raised the slogan "we challenge the blockade by walking on foot" as Libya was then under the embargo imposed by the international community at the beginning of his trip, and then he raised the slogan "Yes, to peace and security…No, to violence and terrorism" after the 9/11 attacks in the United States. After returning home in 2006, traveler Omar Attira won the third rank in the Photography Festival in Germany, by participating with pictures he had been taken for children in Africa. In the future, traveler Omar Attira intends to go on touring the other half of the world crossing the other three continents; North America, South America and Australia. The Traveler’s Profile At twelve o'clock, Sunday 15th of January 1978, traveler Omar Attira was born in the Libyan city of Benghazi where he grew up and lived his troublemaking childhood with his family, to which he is very attached. He loved playing most of the time and he used to make his own toys manually. Omar loves nature and animals particularly cats that he used keep and gets very sad when he loses them. As of early age, he used to love traveling; his dream was to tour the world, and his hobby was coin collecting, stamps and photography. He received his basic, intermediate and secondary schooling in the city of Benghazi his birthplace, in the Birka neighborhood. History and geography were his preferred subjects. He excelled in them, and during classes, he would distractedly draw maps on his desk, and this prompted the teacher to sack him from class as a punishment. His father Belaid Attira was a merchant who died in 2006. His major advice to his son was: "Beware where to tread and strive to achieve success". His mother, Mrs. Mudallalah, was a loving housewife, caring for her family and domestic life. Omar describes her as a teacher. Mrs. Mudallalah has four sons, including Omar and six daughters. They are all leading a closely-tied family life. Omar’s model is his elder sister Zaynab; a lawyer with strong personality and a successful career. She has supported him since childhood.
