About 70 miles (113km) south of Tripoli, the slopes of the Garian jebel (mountain range) rise abruptly from the desert plain to a height of over 2,700 feet (822 meters). They are a magnificent and awe-inspiring sight; bare, brown, and completely without vegetation. A well-engineered road leads to the summit, and as you look back you can see the road twisting below you among the rocks. The road takes you to the village of Garian.
The Road to Garian
Just before Garian, there is a primitive road to the right, which provides a bumpy trip to a derelict army camp, a relic of World War II.
At the camp there is a crumbling building that was probably the cook-house. Painted on the bricks of one of the walls inside the building is an enormous representation of a naked woman, lying on her side, American pin-up style. The upper torso of the woman is shaped like the Libyan coast, and the salient points of her anatomy are marked with the names of Libyan towns.
The "Lady of Garian" was drawn by Clifford Saber, who was with the American Field Force at Garian. Mr. Saber (rank unknown) apparently created the mural to help boost the moral of his fellow servicemen at this lonely, god-forsaken outpost. Saber finished his mural on 2 March, 1943, and for years the "Lady of Garian," as the subject of the painting became known, was a popular tourist attraction in Libya.

على بعد 113 كم جنوب طرابلس، ترتفع فجأة من الصحراء سفوح جبل غريان بارتفاع 822 متر. المشهد رائع في الطبيعة الجرداء. هناك طريق حديث راقي الهندسة إلى قمة الجبل ثم إلى مدينة غريان. قبل الوصول إلى غريان مباشرة، هناك طريق بدائي إلى اليمين، يؤدي إلى معسكر مهجور للقوات الإيطالية من زمن الحرب العالمية الثانية، حيث توجد سيدة غريان
هناك مبنً مهدم في المعسكر، مرسوم على أحد جدرانه داخل المبنى رسم جداري كبير لامرأة عارية"أعتدر عن ذلك", مستلقية على جانبها, على نمط معلقات الدبوسية pin-up الأمريكية التي راجت في الأربعينات. جذع المرأة على شكل ساحل شمال أفريقيا, والنقاط البارزة بجسمها مسماة بأسماء مدن شمال أفريقيا.

البريطاني, وكان رساماً موهوباً. السيد سابر خلق اللوحة الجدارية أثناء اقامة وحدته لبطعة أيام في المعسكر بغريان لرفع الروح المعنوية لرفاقه. سابر انتهى من الجدارية في 2 مارس 1943, ولسنين عديدة "سيدة غريان," كما اُطلق على الرسم, كانت نقطة جذب للسواح في ليبيا
